Urgent call for long-term and short-term volunteers!
Are you over 22, with a driving license, full of energy and willing to work hard to make a huge difference in the lives of thousands of people living in camp Moria on Lesvos? We need you!
The Lava Project is coming out strong from the COVID-19 lockdown and we need help running our public hygiene laundry to serve Moria Camp.We have been in operation for a year now and after a quiet couple of months are building back up to around 1,600 bags of laundry a month and will then expand further.
Our “new normal” means remote supervision of the Project from the UK and Switzerland with a team of four coordinator/volunteers in Lesvos lead by long term coordinator Anastasia who handles all local government, regulatory and financial relationships. In addition to our planned Greek/International team of four, we have five Community Helpers from Moria.
We need at least one more person to join us for at least 6-10 weeks, preferably longer (though we can also take shorter!), as we take the project forward towards our planned capacity of between 3 – 4 thousand bags a month.
This is not 9 to 5 and not a 5 day week, the hours can be long! You must be over 22 with a full driving license and willing to drive our manual transmission Renault Trafic van. The role will involve liaising with partners in or near the camp and helping to develop new relationships, assisting with social media and fundraising. Also organising staff and capacity planning and helping to run the day to day logistics of this growing concern.
We can provide free accommodation and some meals whilst working, a bike and use of the laundry vehicles. Please email us initially at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will set up a video call to discuss further.
We need you!
What will I be doing?
You would be helping to run the laundry by loading and unloading vans, washing machines and dryers, folding and packing clothes, and if you drive – driving our van into Moria camp for our pickups and deliveries.
What impact will I have?
You would be helping some of the most vulnerable people in Moria camp, as The Lava Project assists the medical clinics with treatment of scabies patients.
Who would I be working with?
You would be working with a small team of long-term coordinators, international volunteers, and community helpers from Moria camp.
18 years for short-term volunteers, 22 years or older for long-term volunteers to drive the van
You can either stay with us for free, or we can help you with finding a room in town.
None apart from you own expenses. Transport to and from the project is provided and depending on the hours you choose to work you will have one or two meals a day provided.
